Appearance:
Troglodytes are foul creatures, primitive humans that appear to be trapped in a state of caveman like structure. They are hunched over, with their heads placed almost between their shoulders as a result. Their feet are large and hairy along with their hands which are long enough to be dragged along the floor.
They are short, but only due to their stance - it is thought that if a Troglodyte decided to stand up properly it would be as tall if not taller than an average human. They tuck their legs up instead, probably to reduce their height on purpose in order to fit through their underground cave system.
Their nails are thick and hardy, extremely well adapted for digging, and their face are flat with no visible nose. They have no ears as such, only small holes on the sides of their heads that they hear with. Their skulls are extremely thick, and can even be used with weapons without apparent disorientation - They are highly resistant to head blows and known to be near impossible to knock out.
Despite their primitive appearance they have four fingers and a fully opposable thumb which is rather fragile and has no nail. Their hunched nature has caused them to evolve a rather grotesque spine structure that arches rather sharply at the shoulders. The Troglodyte females are also extremely rare, with all of them being treated like bees treat their queens, and being forced into a state of constant pregnancy in order to keep their foul race alive.
History:
The history of the Troglodytes consists entirely of war with the Anja (although the Anja only fight back when threatened) and trade with the humans of King Shrenk. They are ingenious creatures and notable for their ability to predict the sale of an item, and even how long it will be before the demand lowers. Their greed is exponential, and they will do whatever it takes to make an item that will sell for a good amount of money, which is the cause of the war with the Anja.
Initially, they were allied - A long, long time ago. But this was before they met the humans, who had a currency which the Troglodytes soon learnt to exploit. They could swindle foolhardy cities for vast amounts of money, then travel to a cheaper town and buy many expensive things.
Then they discovered that the humans liked wearing the fur of animals, it was a sign of greatness or style. Then they noticed that they did not hunt the Anja as they were far too difficult to hunt down just for their skin. But the Troglodytes were focused on exploiting this gap in the market, and quickly developed a weapon that could effectively kill an Anja in a single blow from the bushes - The crossbow.
With this, the market for Anja fur coats boomed, and they became the money-obsessed beasts they are to this very day. The Anja are yet to be told by the wind to exterminate them, but when the time comes it is known by all, even the Troglodytes, that the extermination will be immediate.
Way of Life:
Troglodytes run on a Kleptocratic rule system, with the richest having the most power. Their lust for wealth has driven them to commit acts of murder in their own groups before, but such occurrences are dealt with harshly, killing the murderer.
They all live in a single burrow or ‘hive’ as it is called. The hive is an immense underground network of tunnels and caverns that can expand twice the size of a human city and still house only half the inhabitants. Troglodytes are of a low population due to their immensely short life cycle and rarity of females, and also the length of female pregnancy - Two years.
A male will only last for twenty years before dying, and a female only lasts for five births or about 15 years before dying. Troglodytes reach adulthood in a mere five years, attributed to their long time spent in the womb.
However, with this drastic and desperate lifestyle to keep themselves alive, many have estimated they won’t last another century.
The cruelty of a Troglodyte to gain money knows no limits, it has been observed that they even ‘farm’ Anja for their fur, keeping them in underground cages and breeding them for slaughter and profit. This kind of treachery only lasts until news gets out, at which point it has been seen that over four different Anja tribes fight together to free their enslaved brethren.
Faith:
The Troglodytes are not religious creatures, and they have little or no respect for anything other than themselves and their methods for making money.
