Magic is essentially a form of Psychokinesis. That is the ability to impart energy into matter through use of the mind. Psychokinesis takes a lot of concentration and the majority of people skilled with the sword are either unskilled or inept with Psychokinesis or are able to use the ability but due to concentration levels required are incapable of using their abilities during combat.
Psychokinesis comes in two main forms, but there are many lesser used forms that are either deemed too concentration intensive for their worth or are simply too difficult for most to use.
The two main forms of Psychokinesis are Pyromancy (the creation or control of fire) and Cyromancy (the creation and control of ice). Pyromancy is the easier of the two and is generally the first thing any apprentice learns, Cyromancy is the hardest as in order to perform Cyromancy you require the ability to perform Hydromancy which is one of the hardest forms of Psychokinetic powers.
Psychokinesis works on an atomic level, imparting energy or changing energy forms in atoms to cause a desired power. Pyromancy involves imparting kinetic energy into individual atoms to vibrate them causing combustion – It is therefore the easiest form of Psychokinesis as it only needs a low number of atoms to be controlled in order to start a blaze. However, offensive Pyromancy is much more difficult than simply setting your opponent on fire (Hydromancers are virtually immune to Pyromancy, and the body itself along with armour is generally non-combustible or requires ridiculous amounts of kinetic energy to start a blaze).
Hydrokinesis is the hardest form. It requires intense amounts of concentration to first lift a body of water into the air, but after that it becomes much easier due to a multitude of ‘tricks’ magi have learned over many years of study. For example; surface tension holding a large body of water in control with relatively little effort.
Upon holding a body of water in the air it can then be converted to ice and fired as a projectile using Cyromancy. Any Hydromancer can be a Cyromancer, as Cyromancy is easier than Hydromancer – But harder than Pyromancy. Cyromancy involves removing kinetic energy in water molecules to cool it into freezing to form ice, then imparting energy back into the newly formed ice to fire it. Cyromancy is extremely powerful, but requires far more preparation and concentration to perform.
Other lesser practiced forms of Psychokinesis include Aeromancy, the sudden implementation of kinetic energy in a body of air to create powerful ‘sonic blasts’ capable of disarming or disabling foes.
Electromancy, one of the most energy intensive forms of Psychokinesis that usually destroys to user. Electromancy is the creation of lightning, it can be used to revive (defibrillate) recently deceased people, but usually at a cost of the users life span.
Geomancy is intensely difficult as dirt is exceedingly brittle, but it is also useless as dirt cannot be used as a weapon.
Spectramancy (light) is a secondary form of Psychokinesis. Converting energy into light can be used to create a shield of ice out of water, converting the water to ice by turning its heat energy into light energy. Spectramancy can also be used to blind or distract opponents, unfortunately this is rarely used due to its fairly high energy requirement and how it doesn’t stick in the mind like a specially trained skill (Pyromancy). There are no Spectramancers specifically.
