Pyromancy (or Pyrokinesis) is the manipulation or creation of fire using the mind. Though technically ‘manipulation’ is a very loose term in accordance to their actual control over fire. Fire is not something that can be easily controlled as it has no physical form, therefore control is limited to creating and extinguishing.
Pyromancy is much easier when a fire is already present, this is because in order to create a fire you need a readily available amount of energy to convert to heat energy by imparting enough of it into atoms to cause them to combust. Energy cannot be destroyed or created, it must be taken and moved.
Pyromancy has a range of applications, but the primary use of it is to attack. Pyromancy scales extremely well with power, as the more energy you can transfer and the more atoms you can transfer it to - The bigger the flame and the hotter the flame. Other magic styles do not scale so sharply. Not only is pyromancy the best scaling skill, it is also the easiest skill. Imparting energy into random particles is incredibly easy as the energy doesn’t have to send the atoms in a particular direction and it is not necessary to control a great number for the desired effect.
However, unskilled pyromancers are liable to ignite themselves or create a fire that grows out of their skill level and therefore their control. Losing control of a fire is the worst possible scenario for a pyromancer as it often inflicts a state of panic and doubt, which in turn lessens their ability to control it further. This chain reaction is the incarnation of the phrase “if you play with fire, then you’ll get burned”.
It can easily be seen how skilled a pyromancer is at imparting energy by the colour of their flame, and pyromancers have named this the ‘ten skill’ level.
1. Barely visible.
2. Dull flame.
3. Dull cherry colour.
4. Bright cherry colour.
5. Clear cherry colour.
6. Deep orange colour.
7. Clear orange colour.
8. Whitish colour.
9. Bright flame.
10. Dazzlingly bright flame.
The whiter the flame the better, the redder the flame the worse. Starting pyromancers usually practice with sticks until they reach skill level three, then they move on to wood until skill five at which point they move on to grass. Only at skill level five do they need supervision for their practice as it is at this point the fire is likely to grow out of their control. A pyromancer’s training is considered complete once he can create a flame hot enough to grow to a white colour.
This is not to say a pyromancer can suddenly flare up a white flame. The average strength of a pyromancer’s attack is six, any higher requires too much concentration to impart enough energy for it to be useful, but the more powerful pyromancers may use a seven to nine. The Dark Lord Razgriz uses level ten fires near constantly, but uses the lower levels for large-scale incineration.
Pyromancers have a wide range of methods with which to attack, a few misconceptions about pyromancers are stated here.
• Pyromancers cannot shoot balls of fire. Air is not a fuel, therefore cannot be ignited, nor is fire an orb once created, nor can it be given kinetic energy to move in a certain direction.
• Pyromancers cannot ingite skin. Cells are filled with water, and water cannot be ignited. This is not to say skin cannot catch fire, a highly skilled pyromancer with light the hairs to start a fire on the victim’s skin, but this requires a lot of concentration as any intelligent combatant will never remain still whilst fighting a pyromancer.
• Pyromancers cannot launch walls of flame. Fire does not move in a direction desired, it must be started and the fuel moved to launch fire.
Now a list of abilities a pyromancer does have access to:
• Immolation. Immolation is the simple ignition of a fuel, this kind of ability is the key to all of a pyromancer’s skills.
• ‘Fireball’. It is called a fireball but it is not actually a ball of fire, it is a lump of fuel that has been ignited and thrown, or thrown and ignited in mid-air - the latter is the most difficult due to a moving object requiring far more concentration and skill.
• Pillar. A pillar is a small explosion that is easily predicted and avoided, a pillar attack comes in two parts: Heating up the air around where the pillar is desired, then igniting the base of the pillar to cause a cascading effect that temporarily ignites the entire heated area. This kind of attack is usually used as a demonstration of power or a coup de grace.
• Heating. Heating is used to begin a pillar, but it can also be used as a simple defense against ice attacks. Heating is simply imparting heat energy into particles of air, they won’t ignite as they are not a fuel source but they will heat up.
• Liquid Fire. Liquid fire is lava, and only incredibly powerful pyromancers such as the Dark Lord Razgriz have access to such a power. It is simple in premise, imparting enough energy into a fuel source capable of melting that it does so, creating lava.
• Exploding. Pyromancers can explode. This is only ever used as a last stand, it involves using every last remaining degree of energy within their being to ignite as much as possible. This, of course, instantly kills the pyromancer, but is liable to kill everything in the immediate vicinity too.
• A pyromancer has a massive advantage when it comes to fighting a dragon as they can simply ignite the hydrogen within their bodies to essentially make them explode.
• Pyromancers can extinguish already existing fires by simply removing the energy of the fire and putting it to another use. This other use can be something as simple as another fire, or as dazzling as a bright flash of light, loud sound or even sudden gravitation pull toward the fire.
