Anja look like anthropomorphic cats, but they are not feline in terms of their anatomical state. They have no claws nor do they eat meat, in fact they are incapable of eating meat. They are herbivorous by nature and their flat teeth make it virtually impossible for them to effectively chew meat for digestion. Even if they felt the need to eat meat to survive, they probably couldn’t.
An Anja’s entire body is covered with black fur, apart from their face which is usually white, but in some cases brown. They have large eyes that see in more detail than standard human eyes do, and their eyes are practically colour-coded to their tribe. The eye colour-coding is down to how they paired off many hundred years ago to specifically keep to their eye colour; it started out as simple pairing but grew to cultural differences between eye colours, eventually forcing them into tribes.
An Anja’s nose is actually rather mediocre at smelling, with them being no more powerful or weaker than a human’s nose. Anja don’t have whiskers, nor do they have tails.
Anja are highly agile creatures, but they are rather weak. They are easily capable of leaping from one tree branch to another without apparent difficulty, but they are mostly incapable of rolling large boulders. Anja are also fairly average at hearing, despite their large feline ears. This is mostly due to their loud environment, with their ears being formed as such to allow them to hear only what is necessary, but such a design also means they have very poor hearing in directions they aren’t actively listening in.
Anja mature very quickly, with them going from newborn to adult in roughly 12 years. However, in comparison to their short lifespan of only 40 years this is only average. It also gives rise to a popular myth that Anja have no children, the apparent lack of young Anja due to their fast maturity raises questions amongst humans whose children mature much slower. Anja never have twins, their bodies are too small to handle such a load, and they are not capable of interbreeding either.
Anja were only driven to use magic after Troglodytes began hunting them for fur. Without any weapons with which to defend themselves they were easy prey, causing a small number of tribes to be completely wiped out. Magic was turned to by several tribes and it worked a charm in getting rid of the Troglodytes – The risk of death wasn’t worth it. This is also the reason Windbreaker Village grew so large, it was the first tribal settlement to begin using magic, and many tribes traded constructions for the knowledge.
Anja do live outside the forest of Aliadore, but they have been forced to adapt drastically to do so. Most left to avoid King Shrenk, but some left merely to join Duke Stronghelm in the fight against him, as in the colonisation of the Woodland of the Betrothed, which was a fairly easy change considering the highly similar nature of the forest.
Anja that live in snowy environments live through trade, their way of life is perfectly peaceful but laughed at by virtually everyone due to the sheer difficulty they have gone through merely to avoid any slight form of threat. Ironically, they are the easiest targets for Anja hunting.
