Swords are expensive. Even the cheapest swords cost roughly a whole year's pay for a farmer, the cheapest swords being made of wood.
Armour is even more expensive. Anything above leather armour is going to cost an immense amount of money, chainmail costs around ten years of pay for a farmer, and that's only for a chestpiece. Plate armour is about twenty years of pay... For a chestpiece.
