“It is time Driose”
The voice was that of an older female dragon. It whispered through the air as though nothing more than a delicate breeze.
“Matriarch?”
A second voice questioned politely. It was that of a younger male dragon.
The pair were stood out upon a towering cliff observing a multitude of dragons flying below. Several new hatchlings had emerged from their eggs only that morning and these were causing a fair amount of stress for their elders in charge of watching over them. This time, the group had decided that leaping across wide gullies and various breaks in the rock was the best way to test their wings. So far this had resulted in five youngsters plummeting through the air towards the ground. Thankfully all of which had been caught before any injury was caused.
Belinda focused the gaze of her azure eyes upon the younger male beside her. His eyes met hers and he waited expectantly for the Matriarch of the Flamescowl family to explain her meaning further. Though the male was only 210 years of age, he was trusted absolutely as her messenger carrier.
“It is time that another of our kind is sent out to explore and bring back word of the other beings. It has been too long. The outbreak of Foulest Creatures in the Infinite Mountains did take us by surprise and I am loath to allow this atrocity to occur once more,” Belinda of the Flamescowl explained softly. Her large figure belied her true gentle nature. She was one of the larger of her race, with pale blue scales in pastel shades. Her companion was smaller in size, and pale opalescent in colour.
“Bring to me one of our males and prithee, ensure that he is of age enough to leave the safety of our homeland alone,” the Matriarch asked of the younger male.
He inclined his head politely before stepping forward, closer to the edge of the cliff. Delicate leathery wings were unfolded before he dropped from the side, stepping forth into the air. He dropped sharply, head down, before levelling out gently. With a great beating of his wings he began to circle the cliffsides, gaining height as he did so. He looked quite magnificent against the open, cloudless sky and once again Belinda was thankful that he had accepted her offer of becoming her aid. Though strong-willed and courageous, to scar and mutilate him by allowing him to join in with the Harpy raids would be too great a loss in Belinda’s eyes. She cared for the young male deeply, more-so for his innocent and loyal appeal.
She turned away and walked down the narrow ledge that would lead her closer to the egg chamber of her caverns. Young Driose would know where to find her.
