This fairly large isle is the home of many pirates and quite a number of whores that have chosen to reap the benefits of living on an isle with no laws and many, many drunk rich men.
There are currently two major ports in existence. The port to the East, commonly known as Port Dagger, and Port Plague to Southwest. The coasts of the isle though are riddled with coves, inlets and other hiding spots. It is assumed that this is the reason for the pirates choosing this particular place to spend their time when not at sea. This theory is backed up by the fact that the island itself is quite barren. Little plant-life thrives on the island itself and food often must be imported. In fact the only food of regular supply is fish some the waters surrounding the isle.
Port Dagger
This port was once ruled over by the Ex Pirate, Captain Greb. It is now currently leaderless and earning it's name as the Port of Daggers. With no-one calling the shots anymore, the port has broken down into a cesspit of murder and crime that even pirates believe to be obscene.
Only the poorest of pirate captains and their crews dock here as staying the night is often akin to suicide. It is said that Captains often take along extra seamen when docking there, as they are sure to lose some through the course of the night.
The main inns at this port are 'The Lively Stool' and 'The Pig's Head'. There are also a number of taverns where the pirates regularly flock. Included are 'The Rusty Nail', 'The Blackened Rat' and bizarrely, 'The Fluffy Goose'.
Ironically The Fluffy Goose is the regular haunt of the most dangerous Captains known to stay at Port Dagger.
Do you wish to know why? Well, you'll just have to ask them. Though they won't appreciate you insulting their local tavern nor poking your nose in their business. That's how noses ge' lost ye vermin scum!
Port Plague
Under the rule of Plague-heart Dez. Surprisingly Port Plague is very peaceful (as far as Pirate standards go). Very few people are found dead or go missing (both amount to the same thing on Volarna). There are a number of taverns and inns, also there is a trade-market for trading stolen loot for food. It seems to matter little that the food is often plundered from trade-ships too. Trading stolen goods for stolen goods seems to keep the island at peace.
The most popular of the taverns are 'The Black Raven', 'The Salty Keyhole' and 'The Misty Sail'. Dez is said to prefer The Misty Sail, though it is rumored that the owner is an old first mate turned land-lubber.
The cleanest of the inns (and so far the inn with the least number of mysterious disappearances in the middle of the night) is "The Fiddle".
We wished to know the secret of Dez's success, and so we went and asked him. You'll be delighted to know that he was most helpful and he told us this:
"Thar be only one way o' rulin' this 'ere port, an' that be by survivin'. Now I be bet'r at survivin' than Ol' Gus [after checking around we discovered that 'Gus' was the last ruler of Port Plague]. I be bet'r 'cause i be doin' all the killin' m'self. Now I be Cap'tin o' a whole Port Lad. An' i be keepin' it tha' way.
Any o' the scum buckets in me Port be muckin' 'bout, doin' any business that has no business in me Port then i gets rid o' 'em. Doesnay take much to silence a man. Throwin' 'im off me ship tied to a rock will do it. Tha' way 'e aint causin' me no more trouble see?"
We asked him if maintaining a high level of fear was the only thing keeping his Port running smoothly.
"Argg Lad, Ye be a smart one. Aye it be true tha' fear aint the only thing keepin' this ship afloat. Loyalty is the word Lad. Loyalty."
We asked if trusting pirates to be loyal to their Captain was really a good idea. At this Dez burst into laughter. It took him a while to compose himself but once he had he told us this:
"Matey, thar be no keepin' pirates loyal to a man. It be Gold tha' keeps 'em obeyin' orders."
So there you have it. From the horse's mouth as it were. The secret to running a happy pirate cove, bribe or bully the competition into none-existence.
