This is the new home of the Elves.
The whole of this area consists of mainly dense deciduous woodland with some evergreen species to the very North. A variety of fruits and vegetables grow wild in this area, as do herbs and spices. There is also a thriving population of common woodland animals including several species of deer, birds, small mammals, rodents, etc.
Due to the position of Eshent'ur it is difficult to travel to other lands unless by sea. The mountains to the North cut off the forest from the rest of the mainland whilst the rest of the forest is surrounded by the sea known as 'The Vast Emptiness'.
The Vast Emptiness was named so due to the fact that there was nothing of interest surrounding it before the Elves were forced out of their homeland of Nerek'Talar.
The elves live in small villages scattered throughout the forest.
The homes of the Elves are unique in the world of Archidet. They are made up of living vegetation woven to create homes.
Branches of bushes and low-lying tree branches are interwoven to create screens. These screens then sprout leaves or vines are finely woven through to produce a screen that cannot be seen through. Many of these screens are produced to create homes with many rooms. Because of the nature of the plants, the leaves allow the screens to shield the Elves dwelling in the living homes from rain or sleet. The dense woodland accomodates the need for large amounts of plantlife to live this way. Bushes and young trees are often uprooted and replanted where necessary too.
All cooking is done either outside these living buildings, or in larger, specially adapted indoor rooms. As expected, lighting fires for cooking in the middle of, what is essentially a highly-flammable wooden hut, is dangerous and great care must be taken.
There are three major cities in Eshent'ur though. These are Tylarnan, Buikal and Loryth.
Tylarnan
This is the Capital city of the Elves and is also the home of Queen Loriann.
The City of Tylarnan is quite large. Wide streets weave around the living 'buildings' that make up the city. The placement of the buildings themselves are random and difficult to navigate sometimes. Fortunately though, they are grouped together according to what the buildings are used for. Tradehouses are packed together whilst homes are kept seperated. Food houses tend to stay close to market places where fruit, vegetables and meat are being sold. In this way, people are able to find their way around, even if it requires asking one or two people where they are on the way.
In the very center of the City is the palace. This is the largest building of the Elves and it is a truly awesome sight to behold. Unlike the other homes of the Elves, this building has been expertly crafted to give multiple stories. This does mean that it is not all strictly 'living' wood, but vines and other creepers have been woven into the construction and so the specially cut supporting beams go unnoticed. The floorboards of the upper floors are also made from wooden planking to give them stability. Despite this, the palace is the pride of the Elves, it stands at 4 stories high; so high that it is said that Elves sitting on the roof can look out across the top of the forest canopy. The outer walls of the Palace are laced with vines that, in summer, give flower to beautiful white, scented flowers similar to lilies. The inner walls are coated with a dark ivy-like plant, as is the floor. The floor is often bare in places though, exposing the pale brown vines that would usually sprout forth the dark leaves.
The Queen is said to reside on the uppermost floor. The rest of the building contains washrooms, bedrooms for guests and an expansive ballroom on the ground floor.
Cooking and dining takes places outside the palace in the large garden that surround it. This garden is circular in design and is filled with pale blue forget-me-nots in memory of the late King.
Around the Palace the buildings are organised as follows:
Homes are to the North and West, Trade is located to the East and to the South are the places of learning and study. Scholers here are busily recording the history and ancient texts of the Elves that were lost before they are completely forgotten. Many are librarians, philosophers and historians from the old lands of the Elves. This is also where young Elves come to study. Languages, mathematics, philosophy, history and politics are the favoured subjects of the Elves. Music and arts are not taught by the scholers, but can be easily learned from any Elven elder if asked politely enough.
Buikal
Buikal is the smallest of the three cities. It is supported by the rich fruit-bearing forest that surrounds it. Many natural orchards lie in this area, with cherry, wild apples, pears, and hardy citrus fruits growing freely. A huge variety of ground based fruits and vegetables also grows around the town.
This geographical isolation of so much fruit has lead to Buikal being the major exporter of fruit and vegetables through the lands of the Elves. The vast majority of families in the city thrive on being employed as harvesters and the greatest of Elven herbalists are usually raised or trained here.
Fruit and vegetables are regularly traded with the capital city of Tylarnan for necessary materials such as cloths, pots, weaponry for hunting, etc.
Spices are traded with both cities but mainly with Loryth. because the city is farming based, there is no set structure throughout the village. Homes are evenly distributed in the area around rough streets. There is however a market area in which the local Elves can trades their wares. This is because it would be impossible for families to collect many varieties of fruit and vegetables and so they specialise in harvesting specific types.
The market is open every third day of the month. It is clear to see as traders set out blankets upon the floor and settle their goods upon these blankets. The markets are also very loud as traders compete for the attention of passers-by.
Aside from daily life, the city also is home to Princess Cystianne. It therefore often attracts nobleborn Elven gentlemen who seek to woo and marry the next in line to the throne.
Loryth
Loryth is the Major trade center for the Elves. All goods that are either to be exported or inported travel to this City first. It is located away from the sea itself and in the forest but only 20 minutes walk from the Fjord that is used as the Elven port.
Loryth's Port can only be entered or exited through a narrow gap (only wide enough to allow passage of 2 large ships at a time) between two cliff faces. The Fjord opens out intoa deep bay that is perfect for broad trade ships as it is protected from harsh sea conditions.
The Fjord is useful as protection against pirates as they are unable to enter without their ships being attacked from above. Elves are placed on watch on both cliff faces by the Prince Sassoru. More soldiers and guardsmen are located in the Port itself. Only trusted boats that can confirm their identities are allowed through the Fjord. Small inspection boats are taken out to greet newcomers and confirm their identities.
The City itself has a clear army influence. Homes and places of teaching are in the Northernmost region of the city whilst buildings of trade and places to stay for visitors are clearly defined in the South. The buildings are set into clearly set-out squares based around a grid road system. Roads are marked at corners with the number of the road. This makes the City incredibly easy to navigate.
Princess Feuijin is often spotted talking with high-ranking Elven traders in the docks. She is involved with much of the major trade and works hard to raise the wealth of her people in order to rebuild what was lost.
