Hydromancy (or hydrokinesis) is the manipulation of water with the mind. Water cannot be created, that would require knowledge of water’s atomic construction (H2O), and such knowledge is as of yet unavailable to inhabitants of Archidet.
Hydromancy is by far the most difficult form of psychokinetic power (magic) as it requires the ability to control large numbers of atoms and direct the kinetic energy to control them all. Hydromancers have developed a ‘trick’ as such to control large amounts of water with much, much less effort than controlling every single atom – Surface tension. By continuously imparting energy into the surface tension of the water it will hold itself together with much less effort.
However, it is still much harder than any other form of magic as it requires constant attention to the water and its energy in order to keep it in the air and together in one orb. Orbs are the only shape water can effectively be held in due to how water acts, surface tension is easiest and strongest in an orb, and any other shape has a weakness and is therefore undesirable to hold. However, in order to create a conical shard of ice to fire in an offensive manner, individual atoms must be manipulated and surface tension is heavily manipulated.
Hydromancy would be very energy demanding if it weren’t for the energy already in the water keeping it a liquid, all the above happens very quickly to fire the ice straight away, this is very taxing on the mind but hardly taxing at all on energy reserves as all the energy comes from the water itself.
Hydromancers cannot;
• Purify water. Knowledge of bacteria and germs is non-existent; if it looks clean it is clean as far as people are concerned. It would also require a near impossible amount of concentration to control the water and the dirt within the water; it would be much easier and simpler to simply filter it through linen.
• Hold water in the air for extended periods of time. Holding water in the air requires a lot of energy; water has a highly limited amount of such energy and would therefore freeze very quickly if held in the air for too long. With the water’s energy depleted, the frozen ball would fall to the ground and shatter – accomplishing nothing.
• Heal themselves. Though it is logical to be able to control the cells in the body due to their water content, the knowledge required to understand that fact is too limited.
Hydromancers can;
• Quickly pull water out of a source in a predetermined shape. They will need time to prepare, but this is how they create ice shards without using too much energy. They will picture the desired shape and pull out that shape of water from the source, this will use minimal energy and more can be put into kinetic energy (firing the ice shard).
• Control blood. They cannot control their enemy’s blood without being immediately next to them and having immense skill though. A hydromancer of very high skill (8/10) could stop himself bleeding by controlling the blood around the wound, but this would force him to stop all other actions – The concentration required would be far too high.
• Walk on water. By modifying the surface tension where they walk they can increase it to the point of walking on it, but this will require high concentration and a lot of energy. If that wasn’t taxing enough, the slightest distraction will cause the hydromancer to crash through the water’s surface tension and be soaked.
• Dry things. Although very few do, they can. The reason they don’t is because it’s quite simply too taxing and accidentally mistaking an atom of water outside the body for an atom of blood inside the body is… Going to be a problem.
